How lucky was this couple. They were in their Yacht whale-watching off the coast of South Africa, they had been watching the whales for some time, when all of a sudden this whale comes up out of the water right beside the boat and crashes onto the Yacht taking down the mask, rigging etc. It must have been one hell of a shock to have parts of the boat coming down on top of you all of a sudden.

To quote a line in a well-known movie;
‘Looks like we’re gonna need a bigger boat!’
Hi travelrat,
A much bigger boat.
they will dine out on that story for the rest of their lives!
Hi Starry,
Oh yes, and they have pictures and video’s to prove it. Certainly something they will never forget.
I’m on the whale’s side. What did they do to upset it?
Hi Mal,
Hubby (ex-navy) was telling me that whales often come up beside the ships and rub themselves, this helps remove the barnacles, they used to push that hard that the navy ships used to roll back and forth. The things we learn.
They said they didn’t do anything. If you look at the video, the yacht looks to be dead in the water, and the whale is enjoying himself a fair way out, and just coming in closer, and then real close.
The CBS report said the couple were being investigated by the South African authorities for possibly harassing the whale. Do whales, like elephants, have memories?
Hi Mal,
Good question, but I doubt if the whales would measure up to the elephant in any case. The couple deny they did anything wrong, and just going by the video, I believe them.
I have to wonder if the whale was disoriented somehow… We’ve got right whales up here, too, and have seen them while on whale-watching cruises. They come close to the boat, which is much bigger than the one in these videos, but I’ve never seen one bump into the boat. It’s a thrill to see them so close in their natural habitat. Amazing video clips!
Hi Barbara,
Yes it does make you wonder about the whales getting disoriented, I often wonder how they manage to beach themselves so often. Unfortunately every whale season here we always get a couple of whales that beach themselves.

Watching this is fun if you are not on the same boat.
Hi Indira,
That is very true.
