The Ice Hotel Biggest Igloo in the World. (Video)

Ice Hotel

An ice hotel is a temporary hotel made up of snow, sculpted blocks of ice, and some steel framing. They are promoted by their sponsors and have special features for travelers who are interested in novelties and unusual environments, and thus are in the class of destination hotels. Their lobbies are often filled with ice sculptures, and food and beverages are specially chosen for the circumstances.

Existing each year between December and April, the Icehotel in the village of Jukkasjärvi, about 17 km from Kiruna, Sweden was the world’s first ice hotel. In 1989, Japanese ice artists visited the area and created an exhibition of ice art. In Spring 1990, French artist Jannot Derid held an exhibition in a cylinder-shaped igloo in the area. One night there were no rooms available in the town, so some of the visitors asked for permission to spend the night in the exhibition hall. They slept in sleeping bags on top of reindeer skin – the first guests of the “hotel”.
Ice Hotel Wikipedia

Of course there are other Ice Hotels besides the one in Sweden, Canada’s Ice Hotel apparently was the first to make everything out of ice including the bed. Then there are 3 Ice Hotels in Norway , 1 in Romania and a snow village in Finland.
I was reading up on how they actually built the Ice Hotel, it is rather fascinating if you are interested in that type of thing. There are people who came from all over the world to help build the Ice Hotel, it is a great read and very informative.  If you would like to read all about it just go here to “How we build Icehotel.”(not a spelling error that is what they call the article)

Personally I think this would be a fun thing to do to stay in an ice hotel, it certainly would be different, but what an experience. Although I don’t know about sleeping on a block of ice. 🙂 But the rest sounds great, I would love to be able to stay if only for a night, I may have to put this one on the “bucket list.” The old “bucket list” is getting longer every month, I may need a couple of lifetimes to get through it all. 😉

Fantastic post but too cold for me. I’ve included my blog address, must be losing the plot in this crazy world!.

      Hi Windsmoke,
Oh yes it would be cold, or I should say freezing. 😀
I didn’t realize you had a blogger blog, very nice blog, and some good posts as well, I started a blog there only yesterday, it has all of 1 Post. 😆 Still working things out, very different than WordPress. I also noticed we go to some of the same blogs in blogger land. http://mags118.blogspot.com/

Thanks magsx2, Certainly worth seeing (on a short visit to the cold climes). Cheers.

I should imagine it’s about the same as spending a night in a snow-hole in the mountains; it’s surprising how warm it gets, especially if there’s a few of you. However, it’s really a survival technique, although we did practise it from time to time.

(Hot tip: Put your sleeping bag inside a survival bag, or otherwise it’ll be soaked in the morning)

      Hi travelrat,
That sounds about right, I have heard that, or I should say read about how a lot of people all together can keep warm, I always wondered about that, if it actually works. Good tip, you wouldn’t think about the actual melting of the ice while you were sleeping.

48C in the shade here today…I could use a few hours in that hotel. HMMM!

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi kymbo,
Yep, that’s hot as, the ice hotel would be looking very nice at this stage. We are having a rather mild summer here in Brissie, our hotest day so far was 31C, normally we are around 34 to 40C so I don’t mind having a milder summer for a change, maybe your turn will come next year for a milder summer, you can always hope.

      • Elchico says:

31C is already warm but 48C is crazy!! FYI, there’s an ice hotel in Quebec city, but beware, it was -37C last week there!

(haha, I just realized that “an ice hotel” has the same pronunciation as “a nice hotel”, I could just cheat and cross it off my bucket list straight away…)

  5. magsx2 says:

    Hi Elchico,
It gets hot in a lot of places in Australia, it’s our summer at the moment, it hit 32C degrees here in Brisbane today, a very dry heat here, no breeze to speak of. But still that’s not too bad for us as I mentioned above it usually gets a lot hotter in Brisbane.

I would love to see the ice hotel, any ice hotel would be nice at the moment.

Awesome post! I would like to stay one night in an ice hotel, but it’s awfully pricey..

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Rebekah,
I thought you might get something out of the post, I’m glad you liked it.
Yes it isn’t cheap, but if it was something on the bucket list, it would be worth it for one night I feel. 🙂
