Cyclone Yasi Update 3 (Video’s)

Cardwell:- THERE are fears for two missing men, including a man who was last heard of in a yacht off Cardwell last night.
A police spokeswoman said a family member in Canada had contacted police worried about their loved one, who had called them from a yacht out on the bay. Courier Mail

This is our first report of people missing, this was reported yesterday, and we still don’t know if they are missing or if they have no way of contacting anyone. Power is still out in a lot of places, some place are starting to get mobile phone coverage, but it’s all going to take a fair bit of time. There are literally thousands without power and water, the authorities are saying it could take weeks to get everything up and running. There are parts of North Queensland on flood alert at the moment.

TENS of thousands of north Queensland residents could be without power or water for weeks after Cyclone Yasi ripped through the region.
Small towns at the epicentre of the Category 5 storm, including Cardwell, Mission Beach and Tully, were left to pick up the pieces after Yasi destroyed homes and pounded the coast with a storm surge. Courier Mail

Thanks for you fine reporting. I have a sister who lives in Cairns and it has been nearly impossible here to find out anything about the cyclone. There are some things online but you brought it all together so that my mother and I could see the true devastation. Not even the weather netword here in Canada covered it despite how huge a storm Yasi was. Again, thanks.

      Hi Kal,
Thank You for the nice comment. It is always hard when you are trying to find information from o/seas, as you may have read from some of the links to the papers, Cairns was originally going to get the full force of the cyclone, but just at the last minute it turned a bit to the left. But everyone had plenty of warning and evacuation centers were set up. There was minute by minute coverage on the radio for everyone to know when it would be safe to again go outside, it was all handled very well.

You’ll find here in OZ that when something like this happens, neighbors help each other out as much as possible, and people in general are always there to help each other. We are in our cyclone season, there is about another month and a bit to go, so don’t be surprised if you hear of another one, hopefully though the next one won’t be as big.

Cairns is a beautiful place, it has been a few years since I have been there, but it’s a lovely place to live. I’m glad that my posts were helpful. Thank You again for the comment, and for visiting my blog.
