This guy decided to go for a ride with his liquid image video goggles, on his snowmobile in the beautiful snow fields of Wyoming, when he nearly went over a cliff. When he realized he was right on top of this cliff, he stopped, but unfortunately the snow gave way underneath him.

Yes looking at the scenery you can understand why he decided to have the camera with him, it does look like a beautiful place.
I’m going to be harsh here and call that guy a total idiot. First of all, he should know that riding a skidoo in an area of newly fallen snow is apt to cause an avalanche and lord, he could have killed any number of people below had that happened. And secondly, if he’s from the area, he had to know there was a cliff. I don’t know, this guy gets an F from me.
I will say I sat on the edge of my seat watching the entire 2+ minute video though, half-angry and half-worried.

I also wondered if he knew the area, it didn’t say in the newspaper article or on You Tube, I assumed he didn’t know it that well, as you pointed out if he knew the area he would of known the cliff was there.
In most areas, there are strict requirements about where you can ride your skidoo. Even if he wasn’t from that part of Wyoming, he OBVIOUSLY knew how to ride a snowmobile and he knew he was in the mountains. I’m beginning to wonder if this was staged. Although, on second thought, his heavy breathing seemed real. I’ll stick with my original psychological analysis: idiot.
It seemed to me that he was more interested in the view, than in watching how close he was actually to the edge.

Even in the British Isles, cornices can form, and most people, be they on snowmobiles, skis or on foot, know to keep well away from cliff edges in snow conditions, because when they go, they actually take the snow with them several feet back from the cliff edge.
I would agree with EOSR; the guy was just being damn stupid. Even if he didn’t know the route, he should have studied the map beforehand, and known the cliff was there.

Yes it does really makes sense to study a map before you take such a journey, more so I thik when you are on your own.
I used to do land surveying around bluff property and not fearing heights my crew would have to yell at me when I got too close to the edge! 🙂

I don’t know how you did it. Although I’m not really afraid of heights, I do tend to be over cautious when I am in a position of extreme heights. 🙂
I think maybe it is from helping my dad build barns when I was young or from climbing trees maybe.
You may be right. If you were used to heights from a young age, it would not be scary at all. I suppose it’s like the guys that can clean windows of the tall buildings, or the guys that do roofs etc. It’s just something you get used to.
Now I remember why I don’t like them. Had to mute the sound. Very lucky guy. Very popular sport around these parts. Unfortunately a few die each year from mistakes like that and, more commonly, avalanches set off by the noise they make. Remarkable video.

It really is a remarkable video. It was just amazing how that edge gave way, he was very lucky. I have seen some really bad accidents on You Tube with these snowmobiles, they do seem rather dangerous.

I really don’t think any thinking came in to play at all.
Boys and their toys! Even if he was going for the view, wouldn’t it have been much more beautiful and peaceful if he had contemplated it in silence? That noise reminds me too much of Sunday morning lawnmowers. It definitely takes your mind off the beauty of the view. That scare serves him right in my opinion. Do you think that he learnt anything?

I’m still trying to figure out what “liquid image video goggles” are… Never understood the appeal of snowmobiles – what an awful noise they make shattering the wilderness – it would have been so much more rewarding and safer to take in the scenery while snowshoeing. For me, anyway…
