St Patrick’s Day in Australia (Flash Mob Video)

Here in OZ like a lot of places we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, of course it is a very good excuse for a party. 😀
In different parts of Australia there will be Irish music, dances, concerts, and street performers, all doing their thing, Parades and naturally a lot of different Pubs (Hotel/Bar) will also have different things planned for St. Patrick’s Day.

Some people that really get into the day, will wear nothing but green, eat green food, and the most popular drinks that are ordered will be, Bailey’s Irish Cream (always a favourite for the ladies), Jamerson Irish Whiskey and of course Guinness. It’s strange but some people even said they saw some Leprechauns when they left the pubs last year?

In Australia, St Patrick’s Day celebrations have taken place on 17 March since 1810, when the then Governor, Lachlan Macquarie, declared the date an official day of celebration for  the Irish and those of Irish heritage.  200 years later, we are still celebrating with an            annual street parade and family day on the third Sunday of March – this year on Sunday  18th March 2012. The Sydney St Patrick’s Day Parade is the third largest in the world, after the New York celebrations.

  1. I’m a sucker for these flash mobs! Brilliant!

  2. That’s pretty darned slick!

  3. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day, Mags! Loved the video – what a treat for the travelers on that day! Larisa and I got to see Riverdance perform live here in Connecticut back in 1999. We had front row seats and it exhilarating watching them and hearing the thunder of their synchronized dance steps. Will never forget it!

      Hi Barbara,
I have never had the pleasure of seeing Riverdance live, that would of been fantastic, and front row as well, yes something well worth remembering. 🙂
Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to you as well.

  4. munchow says:

Really great. I love the video. And yes, St. Patrick’s is a great opportunity to celebrate. Anywhere in the world. Fun to see how it is in Australia.

      Hi munchow,
It certainly is, a day to have a bit of fun with friends and family. Everyone seemed to enjoy the dancing at the railway station, the kids were great. 😀

  5. Windsmoke. says:

That was very spectacular indeed its amazing where all the dances came from they just seem to appear out of thin air :-).

  6. This was so cheerful – really sets the mood for the coming weekend celebrations. No blarney!

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi writingfeemail,
I think we are in for a lovely weekend here, it has finally stopped raining, hopefully for longer than a day. 😀
There will be parades in most capitol cities, so I hope it stays fine for everyone. 😀

      • Which city best for ST. Patricks Day , planning a trip in 2013, Maureen ( Ireland)

        • magsx2 says:

          Hi Maureen,
Sydney is definitely the best place for St. Patrick’s Day here in OZ. They have heaps of celebrations and everyone has a great time.
Is it your first trip to the Land Down Under? Anyway I hope you have a great time, I’m sure you will meet some nice people, and Thank You very much for visiting my blog. 😀

    How brilliant! Thanks for sharing!

I have always been fascinated with Flash Mobs. Sadly the word “mob” can have a negative connotation, like the word Hacker vs. Cracker with computers. Another thought I hadvehad, I wonder if there could be such a thing as a “Flash Blog”? Would that be a bunch of people showing up on a blog sight and having a side conversation, but in a good way?

I love to see happy people. Thanks for the fun post. Have fun blogging.

Any excuse for a beer and a party…the Irish and Aussies have much in common. Our dislike for authority (google Ned Kelly) and love of a tall tale and drop of booze sees this a favorite day off

  14. I enjoyed that! I remember having to do an Irish Jig as part of an Operatic Dancing Examination in Third Grade (also known as Classical Dancing or Ballet Dancing). Fourth Grade was English Folk Dancing (Sailors’ Hornpipe) and Fifth Grade was Scottish (Highland Fling). Grades One and Two were mimes instead of Folk Dancing. This was on top of the actual Operatic/Classical/Ballet stuff. I wonder why we didn’t do anything Welsh. Apart from the Scottish ancestor who originally migrated from Ireland in the Xth Century, Irish blood is the only bit of the British Isles I don’t seem to have in me. It’s all Scottish, Cornish and Welsh. (Not sure about Manx.)

      Hi Lady Marilyn,
I also thought the video was fun to watch. 😀
It must of been great learning all the dances when you were at school, sounds like fun. 🙂

  15. travelrat says:

This is the day everyone claims to have some Irish in them … even ‘President O’Bama!’

I remember someone who expressed surprise that I claimed no connection with Ireland (apart from a liking for Murphy’s Stout and buying the occasional ticket in the Irish State Lottery) ‘ … even though you look Irish and have an Irish name’. News to me!!

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi travelrat,
I don’t know, liking Murphy’s Stout and buying Irish State Lottery tickets does give you a connection to the Irish. 😀

  16. How was the crowd cleared so the dancers could perform in the open circle? They were wonderful; did you notice how tiny some of the dancers were?

    Ronnie

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Ronnie,
I don’t really know how they cleared the crowd, but the crowd seemed to move when the first dancer starting dancing. 🙂
Yes the smaller kids were really great, and they didn’t hesitate to get in there and do their thing. 😀

  17. aFrankAngle says:

Well done by those in the Land of McOZ! Bravo!!! I know I’m a day early, and you are closer to the day than I, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! …. and OH …. Happy Belated Buzzard Day (15 Mar).

  18. magsx2 says:

    Hi aFrankAngle,
Yes tomorrow is St Patrick’s Days here, so Thank You, and Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you as well.
I had never heard of Buzzard Day, so I looked it up, and it’s to celebrate the annual return of the Buzzards, I couldn’t believe it. 😆

I figured you hadn’t heard of Buzzard Day, but thought you would appreciate it! And yes – I have been to the Buzzard Roost! Hinckely is at the opposite end of the state from me, but my sister-in-law is in area.

  19. Rebekah says:

I’m also a sucker for those flash mobs, and this one was in particularly cool! Loved it! Wish I’d been there to see it in live!

It’s just an hour left till Saint Patrick’s Day, your time, so … Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

It’s pretty green here too … the whole week before, it’s sort of building up and tomorrow we’ll go downtown and have a look at what’s going on.. Gerry is Irish descendant …

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Rebekah,
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you as well.
I also love the flash mobs, I have a few on my blog, from here there and everywhere. 😀
Yes a lot of places are getting ready and are ready for st. pats day, there seems to be green everywhere you look, and no doubt final touches on the floats for all the parades that will be taking place.
Sounds like a great idea to go and see what is happening and what is on. Have a great time. 😀

  20. El Guapo says:

Good clean fun is the best fun of all!
Go them for setting it up and pulling it off!

  21. dearrosie says:

A train station seems to be the preferred place for a flash dance I guess because there’s so much space and people always coming and going. This one had more dancers than I’ve ever seen. It was wonderful.

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi dearrosie,
I agree, a great place for flash dance, yes 100 dancers is a lot, they certainly needed a large area. They all did a wonderful job, such enthusiasm it was good to watch. 😀

  22. Snoring Dog Studio says:

I got goosebumps! I love this – Flash Mobs for Peace!

I can only dance like that in my dreams as well. 🙂
