Here in OZ like a lot of places we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, of course it is a very good excuse for a party. 😀
In different parts of Australia there will be Irish music, dances, concerts, and street performers, all doing their thing, Parades and naturally a lot of different Pubs (Hotel/Bar) will also have different things planned for St. Patrick’s Day.
Some people that really get into the day, will wear nothing but green, eat green food, and the most popular drinks that are ordered will be, Bailey’s Irish Cream (always a favourite for the ladies), Jamerson Irish Whiskey and of course Guinness. It’s strange but some people even said they saw some Leprechauns when they left the pubs last year?
In Australia, St Patrick’s Day celebrations have taken place on 17 March since 1810, when the then Governor, Lachlan Macquarie, declared the date an official day of celebration for the Irish and those of Irish heritage. 200 years later, we are still celebrating with an annual street parade and family day on the third Sunday of March – this year on Sunday 18th March 2012. The Sydney St Patrick’s Day Parade is the third largest in the world, after the New York celebrations.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day, Mags! Loved the video – what a treat for the travelers on that day! Larisa and I got to see Riverdance perform live here in Connecticut back in 1999. We had front row seats and it exhilarating watching them and hearing the thunder of their synchronized dance steps. Will never forget it!

Sydney is definitely the best place for St. Patrick’s Day here in OZ. They have heaps of celebrations and everyone has a great time.

I have always been fascinated with Flash Mobs. Sadly the word “mob” can have a negative connotation, like the word Hacker vs. Cracker with computers. Another thought I hadvehad, I wonder if there could be such a thing as a “Flash Blog”? Would that be a bunch of people showing up on a blog sight and having a side conversation, but in a good way?

I enjoyed that! I remember having to do an Irish Jig as part of an Operatic Dancing Examination in Third Grade (also known as Classical Dancing or Ballet Dancing). Fourth Grade was English Folk Dancing (Sailors’ Hornpipe) and Fifth Grade was Scottish (Highland Fling). Grades One and Two were mimes instead of Folk Dancing. This was on top of the actual Operatic/Classical/Ballet stuff. I wonder why we didn’t do anything Welsh. Apart from the Scottish ancestor who originally migrated from Ireland in the Xth Century, Irish blood is the only bit of the British Isles I don’t seem to have in me. It’s all Scottish, Cornish and Welsh. (Not sure about Manx.)

I remember someone who expressed surprise that I claimed no connection with Ireland (apart from a liking for Murphy’s Stout and buying the occasional ticket in the Irish State Lottery) ‘ … even though you look Irish and have an Irish name’. News to me!!

How was the crowd cleared so the dancers could perform in the open circle? They were wonderful; did you notice how tiny some of the dancers were?

I don’t really know how they cleared the crowd, but the crowd seemed to move when the first dancer starting dancing. 🙂
Yes the smaller kids were really great, and they didn’t hesitate to get in there and do their thing. 😀

Yes a lot of places are getting ready and are ready for st. pats day, there seems to be green everywhere you look, and no doubt final touches on the floats for all the parades that will be taking place.

A train station seems to be the preferred place for a flash dance I guess because there’s so much space and people always coming and going. This one had more dancers than I’ve ever seen. It was wonderful.
