My New Computer

I finally picked up my new computer, and I want to thank all those people that commented on my post about my computer meltdown the other day, I was overwhelmed by all the kind words that everyone left, and to those that didn’t have time to comment but let me know they were there by hitting “like” I thank you all also.

For those that had time to read about my computer meltdown, you know that I decided to get a computer built after going from shop to shop; it was cheaper as well than a computer off the shelf for what I wanted. I actually found a place that builds new computers not far from home, and it is only a small shop, but the service was fantastic, the guys were very helpful and with my knowledge of computers which amounts to zero, they were more than patient. I would recommend this place to anybody. They also repair computers and also sell second hand computers, as well as new, it really is a one stop shop.

The care package I received. Click photo for larger view.

When I went to pick up my new computer they even gave me a care package, which had a LCD cleaner for my screen, a couple of discs including windows 7, and a 4 GB memory stick.
For anyone that lives in Brisbane Australia, and needs anything to do with computers here is their web site. Computerdrive

They transferred everything for me from my old computer to my new computer, which was a blessing for me, all my documents, photos, favourites, just magic. 😀
The guys even set up my ISP e-mail. Now of course I have to learn about this new system, and set it up the way I want, this will take me some time, but no doubt I will learn a bit in the process.

My old computer
I had Vista Home Premium (32 bit) 2GB ram, 360 hard drive, DVD burner, card reader, it was an Acer and it lasted just over 6 years.

My new computer
Being built from scratch it is no particular brand, but a whole lot of different brands.
New Intel Pentium DC2. 7 GHz, 4GB Ram, 500GB HDD, DVD Burner, card reader, Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
I comes with a 12 months warranty which includes parts and service. That is as far as my knowledge goes. 🙂

My screen is nearly new as I had to replace that only a few months ago, so I only needed the computer itself, I’m still using the original Acer keyboard, although some of the letters are missing, but it is still going strong just the same. We also decided to get another desk top computer from them as well, so now we have 2 desk top computers, one each. 😀

  1. So pleased to see that you are up and running again, Mags. You left a gap in the Internet.

  2. Welcome back to your happy place, Mags! Missed your daily vid’. 🙂

  3. travelrat says:

I was reading an article the other day that says the desktop is a thing of the past … I disagreed; although a laptop or Netbook is fine if you want to work out in the garden or something, it’s best for it to be complementary to, rather than to replace the desktop.

Besides, my old HP (named. naturally, ‘Saucy’) is still going strong … although sometimes, I feel I’m the only person in the world still using Windows XP.

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi travelrat,
I don’t have a laptop, I myself prefer the desk top, for me I don’t need a computer when I am out and about, we have a study room so that is where I am when on the computer, of course I know a lot of people that prefer laptops because of the convenience for them, we are all different, and just as well otherwise it would be a boring world if we all liked the same thing. 😀
You are not the only person with an XP, a lot of our friends have XP and as far as I know none have decided to change. 🙂

  4. andy1076 says:

Cheers!! now you can write more than ever right?? 😉

  5. Lenore Diane says:

    Congratulations, Mags!!

  6. I have to admit that I’m a total moron when it comes to computers. I know absolutely zero. I have the phone # of this computer tech guy taped to my screen for any emergencies. I’m sure he thinks I’m the most ridiculous person he’s ever met. haha!

  7. Yeah…you’re back in business!! No need to respond!

  8. reb says:

Congratulations … this all sounds so great — both the computer itself, and the guys! I’m sure you find this much speedier 🙂

We have an old desktop still, that’s on its last legs, but it still works … Gerry and I have each our laptop. I really want to be able to bring it with me, in case I go somewhere … to bring it on my trip last year, was priceless. It will turn three now in Sept.

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi reb,
The guys at the computer shop were great, very helpful, the best service I have had in a long time. 🙂
I must admit I did enjoy your posts that you published while you were away they were great. 😀

  9. Windsmoke. says:

I decided to go down the same road in 2005 and have a computer built from scratch all with second hand bits and pieces from our local computer shop and so far i’ve only had to replace the screen about 12 months ago, touch wood nothing goes wrong with the hard drive which is a real old clunker but it does the job i want it to do :-).

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Windsmoke,
Mine was done with all new parts, but I feel and hope it is better than buying one off the shelf, I spoke to a lot of people and this is what they recommended.
That is very good going seeing as how it was done with used parts, well done to the guys that did that for you, looks like they may have done a good job. 😀

  10. niasunset says:

I am so glad to hear this dear Mags, Good Luck with your new computer… Seems that they did great job. Thank you, have a nice day, with my love, nia

  11. Welcome back Mags, now you’ll be able to post more with a much faster machine

  12. gitwizard says:

Great to have you back Mags, thanks for all the tech update! 🙂

  13. aFrankAngle says:

Woo hoo! Mags is back in town!!! Thanks for sharing the great news. Just letting you know that I missed you on this post …. and you will read why … well, when you get a chance.

    On Something Nice

  14. Hallelujah! I know what it’s like to be ‘disconnected’ and the beauty of being restored to the world.

  15. Elyse says:

Great Mags. I am glad that you are back in business. Especially since tomorrow is Friday and I am not sure if I could have a weekend without your weekend jokes :).

  16. Hi Mags! Sorry I haven’t been on in a while. Sorry to hear your computer 😦 that’s great that they transferred everything for from my old computer to your new computer~yay! Reminds me I need to buy a USB for all of my pictures that I have on my computer, just in case my computer crashes or something. It’s always nice to get a new computer 🙂 I hope it’s one of the best computer you’ve ever had!!

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Any Lucky Penny,
Yes the old computer had to go to computer heaven. 🙂
I had a computer built from new, none of the old computer parts are in my new computer, all new parts in this one, the old one was only good for the dump. 😀
Yes the USB’s are very handy, I have a lot of things stored on them, much better than being in the computer.

  17. tempo says:

That seemed like it was fairly painless, so glad it’s all sorted for you. Your new Box looks/sounds like it’s what you wanted and i hope it lasts many happy years

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi tempo,
Thank You. I had very good service, and as I pointed out the guys were fantastic, it certainly saved me a lot of frustration and time, I’m just trying to work out the new system now and getting things the way I like, this is not an easy task, but at least I didn’t have to actually set the computer up. When I went to pick it up, they hooked it all up to show me a few things, and even put it in a box for me to take home, brilliant, I knew everything was working, and I had nothing to worry about. 😀

  18. There is no frustration quite like computer-death frustration. Getting another one and getting it up and running is never easy. I do hope you had something with an olive or twist of lemon to celebrate.

  19. BoJo Photo says:

    congrats on the new computer!

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi BoJo Photo,
Thank You very much, it’s good to have a computer again. 😀
I’m glad you commented, I lost your RSS feed, now at least I can put it back in the list. 🙂

  20. Linda Vernon says:

Wow Mags! They transferred everything for you? I may have to use them next time I need a new computer. It would be worth a trip to Brisbane don’t you think and maybe I could sneak in an Australian vacation while I’m at it! 🙂

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Linda,
I know it was wonderful, truly fantastic service, you don’t see too much of it these days that is for sure.
I think it would be well worth a trip to OZ. 😀

  21. Glad to see you’re back up and running again! Looking forward to more great posts from Australia!

  22. barb19 says:

Glad to see you back here again, with your new super-duper computer, Mags! All the ‘techie’ details sound good. I’ve moved down to the Gold Coast, so am going to check out Computerdrive’s website now; thanks for the tip.

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi barb19,
I didn’t know that you had moved from Hervey Bay, that is a big difference, but of course a lot handier to everything as well, I wish you all the best in your new place. 🙂
I doubt if I would of got the service that I did anywhere else, I am more than happy, I’ll be even happier when I have worked out the system. 😀

      • barb19 says:

We lived on the Gold Coast till we retired 4 years ago, and decided to move up to Hervey Bay where it’s quieter. However, we missed our family and friends on the Gold Coast, so we came back – just a week ago!

        • magsx2 says:

That is great, it’s always nice when Family and Friends are close by. Only a week ago, so you are still going through the unpacking stage, it is never easy moving.

  23. Arindam says:

    Hi Mags,
Your new computer is an assemble one. You made the right choice. Your system configuration is also great. But I think should have gone for little bit extra Hard disk space; 1 terabyte would be a better option. And you are using Acer key board; I never used that one before. I am going to try that one soon. Till now Logitech is my favorite. But I am not sure if it’s available in Australia or not.

Enjoy your time with your new computer. I am sure your new computer is going to give birth to lots of new wonderful posts.

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Arindam,
For the things I do on the computer, the hard drive is more than I need, so I am happy with that, my old one still had a ton of space left on it, so I really don’t need any bigger. 🙂
Yes the old Acer keyboard is going strong, I don’t know for how much longer it is now 6 years old, and I love it. 🙂

  24. malc50 says:

Welcome back. Mags. I’m looking forwards to tomorrow morning’s weekend jokes, before I go off to vote. Cheers, Mal.

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Mal,
Yes voting again tomorrow, I will be glad when it’s over, voting twice in two months is a bit much, it’s a shame we couldn’t have the council elections the same time as the State. 🙂

  25. ~mimo~ says:

congrats! Hope you write many great posts on this one!

  26. Colline says:

I wish you many, many years with your new computer 🙂
I have found the service and help you get from the small owner-run shops so much better than the service you receive at these big chain stores. Whenever I can, this is where I prefer to go (though they are becoming a rare thing).

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Colline,
Yes these small places are getting very rare, it certainly is a shame, when they are no longer around people will wonder why. The service I recieved you just wouldn’t get in a big store, it just doesn’t exist in those places, like you I much prefer to give my support to these type of places.

  27. hotlyspiced says:

I so pleased you have a new computer and are once again, operating! I do hope the computer behaves itself and give you many hours of non-confrontational pleasure for many years to come xx

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi hotlyspiced,
I also hope everything keeps going well with the computer for many years, although computers do have a mind of their own, you just never know what they are going to throw your way. 😀

  28. How did we ever live before computers? Probably read books and had more family time but this era is so much more fun – sitting in NY and reading your Australian blog. Gotta love it. Welcome back.

  29. pixilated2 says:

I always get the blazing fast computer, not because I would choose it, but because my husband is seriously into computing! He builds them, and I just care that they turn on and don’t freeze up. LOL! So, I always think that my old one is “just fine Dear” and then he builds me a new one and I think, “WOW, this is so much faster than my old one!” and “How did I ever put up with the slower version?” So, while coming to the need of a new computer is a pain in the butt (I really do hate the hassle!!!) getting the new one is always FUN! And so much FASTER!

Don’t you agree? 🙂 Glad you’re up and running again! ~ Lynda

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Lynda,
How lucky you are to have a husband that builds computers.
I totally agree, it is just working out the new system, and putting everything where I want, once I am through that, the rest is smooth sailing. 😀

  30. starlaschat says:

Hi Mags Such good News! There’s nothing like a new computer. You sounded a bit techy talking about your new computer. Congratulations! :+) Zoom Zoom

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi starlaschat,
I am far from being techy, I know nothing about computers except the very basics, I knew some people may be interested in what the new computer had, and that is as far as my knowledge goes. 😀
It sure is Zoom Zoom and no looking back as well. 🙂

      • starlaschat says:

well you sound a little techy lol :+) I know I’m not a computer tech either. I recently got a new lap top and I love it. It’s like a cadilac its so fine. Life is Good. Have a great weekend!

  31. So happy you’re back, Mags, and up and running again! Your new computer sounds great and made just right for you. I think computer technicians are wizards, aren’t they? The magic they perform for the rest of us is amazing!

  32. somebody is happy with their new computer 😀

  33. dearrosie says:

    HI Mags,
I’ve been so busy entertaining my daughter and her dear one that I haven’t had much time for blogging and didn’t know your computer had died. That’s a real Ouchy for a blogger. I don’t know much about computers so can’t comment on the new one, can only say that I use Macs and I replaced my 7 year old model last December (with another laptop) and even though it’s so much thinner and lighter it can do so many beautiful things (like FaceTime), and do it so unbelievably quickly.

Yesterday I served a whole bunch of Ozzies who came from Brisbane. Nice folks. I told them about you 🙂

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi dearrosie,
When I was looking around for a computer, I was amazed at how thin and how easy to handle the laptops where, in every colour of the rainbow. 😀 You sound very happy with your computer as well, lets face it we use them a lot we have to be happy with what we choose.

That is unreal having a bunch of people from Brissie, it sounds like it must of been a group or something, I’m happy to hear you found them nice that is great, who knows you may have some of them enter the blogging world. 😀

  34. Lynn says:

Hi Mags.I’m glad you have it already!!I also got a new one recently. We got a laptop. What i like most is that there’s no noise at all!! The older one lasted 8 years and was like an old tractor. The noise it made drived mad.
Nice to see you around again!! 🙂

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Lynn,
I know what you mean about noise, a friend had a computer that drove her mad with the load whirring every time she turned it on. 🙂
I’m glad your happy with your computer, it is not always easy to find something that suits us. 🙂

  35. Bliss says:

Oh! I missed the meltdown but glad you are back and rolling. Computers. Can’t live without them anymore…well, OK, I guess I could but I choose not to. ; )

  36. Wow! The package looks really great, I’m so happy for you = ) I think a lot of people too = )

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Aina,
You don’t realize how much you miss your computer until it goes to computer heaven. 😀
It is great to be back on line, still got a lot of learning to do about the new system but I’m not doing too bad for an old girl. 🙂
Thank You very much for taking the time to comment.

  37. Selma says:

So glad you were able to get a new computer. I like custom built computers a lot because you can add extra features according to what you need which you can’t do with something like a Mac. Hope you and your new computer have many happy years together!

    • magsx2 says:

      Hi Selma,
Yes that is one of the reasons I decided to go that way, and the fact that the guys put everything I wanted back on the new computer, just heaven in my book, it would of taken me ages to get everything back, I’m not real good with things like that. 😀
